How to mint cast iron sewer

When replacing a worn-out section of the sewage system, there is a risk that an adjacent section of the old pipeline will begin to leak due to pressure drops. If possible, it is better to change the sewer network completely. In order not to complicate the process, it is important to correctly dismantle the drain line.

Features of dismantling cast iron sewers

To dismantle cast-iron pipes, you need a grinder

The dismantling of external sewer pipes differs from the analysis of highways inside the house. Since the pipe sections in most cases pass underground, find the pattern of their passage. To make a digging, you need to know exactly where the highway is located.

Thereafter:

  1. They carry out earthwork - they dig a trench along the location of the pipeline from the hole through which the cast-iron sewage in the base of the house is brought out to the storage chamber. If there is a need - and in the area between the two containers of the structure for cleaning.
  2. Remove insulation material, waterproofing.
  3. Separate the transition elements (fittings, clamps, couplings) using a grinder or pipe cutter.
  4. The pipes themselves are cut and pulled out.

Separate sections (especially at the joints) are enough to incise for removal, after which they are broken with a sledgehammer. Since cast iron is heavy material, fragments should be small.

The restoration of home-based fan systems only at first glance seems simpler and easier. It is not necessary to dig out the pipeline, as in the analysis of external sewer lines, but it will be necessary to coordinate the work with neighbors and supervisory authorities: the management company, the HOA, and the water utility. It is easier to change the old sewage network in a private house or in the country - coordination is not required there.

Tools and materials

Since the installation of a new highway begins immediately after dismantling the old one, materials for installing the system should be prepared in advance:

  • sealant;
  • cement mortar;
  • rubber cuffs for fixing pipes in the sockets;
  • pipe segments of the desired section and suitable length;
  • fitting connections: plastic tees, couplings, special transitions from cast iron to plastic;
  • compensating elements for connecting sewer pipes;
  • clamps for fixing the pipeline on the wall surface.

Tools that will be needed for dismantling - grinder, chisel, sledgehammer.

Preparatory work

Before starting work, shut off the water supply

Owners of apartments located on the top floor can immediately begin dismantling. Residents of the penultimate floor and below must notify the neighbors of the planned work and the time of their implementation, so that they do not use plumbing during this period.

The best option will be the simultaneous replacement of the main riser in all apartments.

It may happen that the neighbors do not want to change the pipe. Then you have to dismantle the part of the riser that is with you. Perform this carefully to avoid damage to pipes leading to other residents.

Before proceeding with dismantling, shut off the water supply in the apartment, if only the installation of a new sewer line is performed; to the riser if it is being replaced. Disconnect all sanitary and electrical equipment in the bathroom and remove excess items and furniture from the technical area.

Methods for dismantling cast-iron sewers

It is advisable to immediately change the entire riser in the house

First, short, horizontally located sections of the highway are disassembled, and then the dismantling of the riser begins.

  1. In the center of the riser, using a pipe cutter or grinder, make two cuts with a distance of 15 cm and at a slight angle to each other. Cutting the pipe completely is not recommended, since the upper part of the pipeline is able to clamp the disc of the grinder.
  2. Carefully fetch out the cut pipe piece.
  3. Of the two remaining segments - upper and lower - cut the first. Consider the height of the transition element, which then must be put on a piece of riser protruding from the floor. To cut the pipe was strictly at right angles to its axis, first stick the adhesive tape along the cut line.
  4. Pull out a piece of cast-iron pipe protruding from the socket of the sewer tee. If it can be rocked by gently moving from side to side, pull it up until the pipe comes out.

If these actions do not give the desired result, you will have to cut the tee, retreating 20-30 mm from the socket. Then, using a special wedge, remove the rest of the tee piece by piece.

If the entire trunk is not assembled well, it is possible to loosen not only the junction with the tee, but also other docking points. After that, the pipeline is disconnected into its constituent elements.

Do it yourself with a do-it-yourself pig-iron sewer by splitting the pipe into small pieces with a hammer. To do this, you first need to use a grinder. This option allows you to save the junction of sewage fittings with plastic pipes. But you still need to cut off the sewer from the docking station. The pipe is completely cut off using a special steel wedge. He is driven into a cut made by a grinder.

Another method of minting the joints of the cast-iron sewage system while preserving the connecting elements is to remove the old fixing material. Use a chisel and a hammer. Carefully knock down the cement, then with a screwdriver or knife they pick up the heel or tow and pull it out of the socket. The field of this pipe section is quite easily removed.

Possible problems

Replacing the riser can cause certain difficulties, since earlier masters often used sulfur solutions for caulking. Liquefaction of a hardened composition is only possible when heated with a gas burner or blowtorch. When sulfur is heated, toxic fumes are released, so the use of a respirator in this situation is a prerequisite.

To disassemble the old cast iron sewer in your apartment, it is unacceptable to make strong blows and intensively loosen the details. This can ruin the pipelines located in the apartments adjacent to the top and bottom.

In order to avoid any problems during the subsequent dismantling, in the process of installing a new highway, some nuances are taken into account:

  • Start installing the riser from below.
  • The position of all sockets must be opposite to the flow of water.
  • It is better to replace the riser as a whole rather than in parts.
  • The toilet is connected to the riser by means of pipes with a cross-section of 110–160 mm, and the washbasin - with pipes from 50–70 mm.
  • Before starting work, they make a drawing and mark the planned highway. If the pipes are hidden, the strobes are laid to the depth of concealment, while observing the required slope.
  • When assembling the pipeline, all gaskets and joints are lubricated with vegetable oil.

When selecting sewage pipes, it is necessary to ensure that they are free of cracks and swellings: such defects can lead to leaks.

If it is planned to replace the entire riser, it will be a more rational solution to change the plumbing fixtures and bends located on the equipment. In addition, during the installation process, you can position the trunk in a new way, making it more convenient.
