How to carry out finishing work in unheated rooms

Building a house, whether it’s own or multi-unit, is always a long and rather laborious process. Many, having completed construction, or having bought an apartment, are faced with the problem of finishing work in rooms without heating. How to carry out these works so that the repair lasts as long as possible, and it does not have to be redone? This will be discussed.

In such conditions, you can safely carry out plumbing work: lay engineering systems for water supply, install plumbing. Performing a test run of the systems to detect leaks is quite acceptable, but it is necessary to drain the water at the end of the work, otherwise the pipes may be wasted. You can do electrical work.

Now let us dwell more carefully on the most common materials for decoration.

Linoleum

Laying linoleum can be done using a special adhesive, resistant to low temperatures. The material must be soaked before attaching to the base, spread out well in advance on the surface to which it will be attached, for alignment. It is not recommended to leave linoleum in rolls for the winter in rooms that are not heated.

Drywall

At low temperatures, you can prepare for installation: fix profiles, conduct electrical wiring. Drywall installation is better to postpone in the spring or summer. This material absorbs moisture and may warp or swell.

Plaster

For high-quality plastering of walls in a cold room, frost-resistant plaster can be used. Antifreeze salt additives can be added to conventional cement mortars: a five percent potassium carbonate solution, a one percent potassium chloride solution, and a common salt is less common. Plaster mixtures are not recommended.

Laminate

Before laying, the laminate must be left packaged for 48 hours in the room where it will be laid so that the material accepts moisture and temperature characteristics. The temperature regime for its installation must be at least +18, so it is impossible to lay a laminate or parquet in rooms with a low temperature.

Wallpapering the walls

To carry out this type of work, the temperature regime in the room should not be lower than +5, otherwise wallpaper glue will not cope with the task, because It does not tolerate low temperatures.

Tile

It is possible to lay the tiles in an unheated room at temperatures below +10 when using winter glue for tiles. It retains its properties even at very low temperatures, dries quickly and prevents tile slipping.

How to determine the right material

If you still decide to do the finishing work in the winter, then you need to carefully observe the temperature regime of the materials that you use. As a rule, all conditions are indicated on the packaging.

Materials such as acrylic varnishes, water-based paints, dry gypsum mixtures are not recommended for winter decoration. Any material containing water in its composition, when used in rooms with a low temperature, will not last long, it will crack, and stains may appear on the paint.

Forced room heating

To carry out work requiring a higher temperature, you can resort to artificial heating of the room. You can use for this electric heaters or heat guns. You need to start heating the room at least 48 hours before the start of work, so that the desired temperature regime is established, and excess moisture is gone. At the end of the work, heating must not be stopped for at least another couple of weeks so that everything dries well. If this norm is not maintained, the material will become worthless.

For those who want to decorate the walls with exclusive materials or original methods: decorative plaster, murals, bas-reliefs - it is still better to leave work before the warm time.

You can install a stretch ceiling made of polyester fabric, this material does not change its properties even at low temperatures. The installation of a ceiling made of PVC film requires a temperature of at least +5.

Plastic windows

Plastic windows can be installed in the winter, but at a temperature not lower than -15, during installation it is necessary to use frost-resistant mounting foam.

I would like to specifically focus on the positive aspects of installing windows in the winter:

  • profitability. As a rule, most people install windows in the warm season, many companies make seasonal discounts, and low workload of workers will allow you to install a window in a short time;
  • the opportunity to see all the problems. When installing a window during the warm season, when the cold weather sets in, you can notice such problems: the window sweats, leaks, condensation occurs, etc., the reason may be incorrect installation or poor-quality components. When installing in the winter, you can immediately notice all the flaws and fix them in place.

Given all the nuances, we can say that high-quality finishing work can be carried out at low temperatures. The main thing is to follow all repair recommendations for a certain temperature regime and use the materials that are most suitable for a particular season.
