Rules for joining plastic sewer pipes with glue

Modern technologies for connecting pipe segments using adhesive compounds allow you to create the most airtight line. Communications are strong and durable. The ease of installation makes it accessible even to a layperson.

Types of glue and principle of operation

Composition for gluing PVC pipes

For gluing pipes, a composition based on a solution of polyvinyl chloride with additional sitting additives is used to improve adhesion. The principle of operation is simple: when applied, the glue begins to harden due to evaporation of the solvent. Molecular PVC particles bind to each other, forming a strong connection similar to the pipe wall. For strength and tightness, this method is called "cold welding" - the effect is no worse.

There are compounds that use, preheating the ends of the pipe segments. The label must indicate that the product is used for hot bonding.

Purely “cold welding” is carried out by other compounds. They can be universal and specialized. The latter are used exclusively for the installation of sewer pipes and water supply. Universal adhesives are used to glue any polymer parts, even solder linoleum pieces.

Adhesive compositions are also divided into two types. It depends on the density of the plastic product:

  • for soft foundations - water supply and sanitation pipelines;
  • for solid - siphons, fitting connections.

Regardless of the hardness of the material, a suitable adhesive is immune to continuous contact with water at different temperatures.

Advantages of the technique

Advantages of using glue for PVC-based water and sewer pipes:

  • Reduces the risk of leaks due to molecular bonding. Minimum labor costs.
  • Fast and inexpensive assembly. The whole process can be performed independently. All that is required is to purchase materials and choose the right glue.
  • Universality. You can glue plastic pipes for sewage or water supply of any section - from 6 to 400 mm.
  • Use for repair work. In this way, not only connect the pipe segments, but also seal the damaged areas on the highway.

Cold welding is an inexpensive and practical method for assembling sewer pipes. For its use there is no need for the cost of additional parts for the connection or specialized equipment.

Adhesive bonding of plastic products is used quite often. It provides greater tightness of the pipeline in comparison with the o-rings.

Criterias of choice

When choosing the adhesive composition, be sure to study the application manual and take into account the characteristics of the material. The following indicators are critical:

  • Bonding time. For cold connection, approximately four minutes.
  • Water pressure. The higher this indicator, the more reliable and more expensive the adhesive composition.
  • Features of the loads. Pipelines can be displaced under external mechanical stress or due to internal pressure. In order for them to maintain integrity under biasing loads at the joint, it is necessary to choose a more reliable glue.
  • The method of use and storage conditions of the adhesive. If these indicators are not met, the quality of the glue will decrease.

It is necessary to take into account the installation site of the highway. Operating conditions in different places can differ significantly in terms of pollution, air or water temperature in communications and other important indicators. For various zones, adhesives are selected individually.

Stages of connecting work

For a smooth cut, it is recommended to use a special pipe cutter

Cold assembly of polymer lines is usually performed by the bell method. To increase the reliability of the joint, the surface of a narrow section of the pipe segment is given a slight roughness - already at the factory or at home with the help of sandpaper. The cleanliness of the “welded” surfaces is also important. If they are dirty, the bonding strength will be significantly reduced.

Preparatory work

Assembly is carried out in a dry room at a temperature of 5 to 35 degrees Celsius.

Preparatory work with pipe segments includes four stages:

  1. Make even cuts of parts without roughness using a pipe cutter. If it is not, then use a hacksaw for metal with small cloves, and then process the edge with sandpaper. This must be done, since the burrs will not allow you to create a tight connection.
  2. Mount without glue the entire pipeline for fitting and mark with a marker the marks of all sections for “welding” and the depth of installation of pipe sections. Disassemble the design.
  3. With a cleaning compound, preferably of the same brand as the adhesive, degrease the marked areas. You can lightly sand the inner end of the pipe to increase adhesion.

Before sticking a crack on a plastic water pipe, the surface around must also be cleaned and degreased.

Bonding technology

To apply glue, you need a brush with natural bristles.

Stages of connecting pipe sections during cold installation:

  1. Stir the adhesive thoroughly before applying to the surface.
  2. Take a brush and apply it evenly and thinly to the sockets of the fitting joints, and then to the pipe. Apply glue along the pipe, not across.
  3. Insert the pipe section all the way into the socket, being guided by the marks made during preparation. When connecting, elements can not be downloaded and scrolled.
  4. Hold the docked parts firmly for 15 seconds to give the composition time to set.
  5. Remove excess adhesive that protrudes around the edges with a paper towel.

Adhesive compositions are caustic, easily combustible, therefore they must be stored in a place protected from fire, out of the reach of children. Do not smoke during the cold welding process. Wear protective gloves so that the glue does not get on the skin.

Possible mistakes

If the adhesive composition is applied unevenly or the surfaces of the parts were uneven, the tightness of the joint is broken. It will be leaky when drying the adhesive layers. After the adhesive is applied, there are about two minutes left for high-quality joining of the sewer elements. After that, the glue dries.

The appearance of a soft layer of adhesive is possible due to the low temperature in the room, or if there was little time for solidification of the substance. In this situation, the evaporation of the solvent included in the adhesive composition did not occur completely.

The ingress of air during spreading or insufficiently thorough mixing of the adhesive composition is the reason for the formation of a porous and weak adhesive layer.

Misalignment occurs due to insufficient fixation of the connected elements, as well as their shift in the process of setting the adhesive composition.

Cold welding allows you to mount high-quality and durable water and sewer systems. The method is used when creating communication highways in a private and multi-storey building.
