Replacing a fluorescent lamp in a ceiling light

Ceiling lights are actively used fluorescent lamps. They are economical, reliable, have a long service life and are cheaper than LEDs. Luminescent products can be seen in office and administrative buildings, in industrial premises, in residential buildings. Despite the duration of operation, the lamps have to be changed periodically. There are different replacement methods, which depend on the device of the lamp and the type of cap.

Principle of operation

Fluorescent lamps

Luminescent sources have this name due to the phosphor. This is a coating that is applied inside the tube. The phosphor gives the lamp special properties, which increases the power compared to classic lamps with the same energy consumption. The wiring diagram has a throttle and starter. Without them, the bulb will not work.

How the source lights up:

  • voltage is applied to the electrons;
  • in a gaseous medium, a current flows under high voltage and a glow discharge forms;
  • the current passes through the spirals, warms them up, as a result of which the contacts close;
  • after cooling, the starter contacts open;
  • there is a pulse voltage on the inductor, because of which the lighting is turned on.

Externally, the bulb is a glass flask of different diameters. The body itself is straight or U-curved. Ceiling fluorescent lights come in different shapes and with different effects. For ceilings, they buy products in the form of tubes.

Such light sources are used in offices, hospitals, schools, administrations, apartments and other residential and non-residential premises.

What you need to replace

Before replacing, you need to find out which part burned out. The starter, throttle or lamp itself could burn. The first two components can be determined by the external deformation and the smell of burning. A blown bulb can be distinguished by the darkened edges.

Work should be in compliance with safety regulations and in a de-energized room. Tools must have insulated handles. Work is required in protective gloves.

Types of socles

The base is an important part in the design, which is used to fix the lamp and supply electricity. In luminescent sources, cartridges E14, E27 (both screw), G5, G13, G23 (pin) are used.

G5 and G13 are used in local lighting and in kitchen ceiling lights. Their installation method is the same. For wall-mounted devices, G23 plinths are suitable.

Replacement algorithm

To remove, replace the fluorescent lamp with cap G5 and G13 as follows:

  1. Turn off the lamp and electricity.
  2. Detach cover or grill. In models with one lamp, the lampshade can be fixed on the lamp itself. To remove it, you need to gently pull on it.
  3. Get out the lamp. You need to grasp it with both hands on both sides and rotate it around the axis by 90 degrees in any direction. Then you need to gently pull it from the lamp and pull it out.
  4. Install a new lamp with the same dimensions and power. Both ends must be inserted into the cartridge and rotated 90 degrees around the axis in any direction. Fixation can be judged by a light click.
  5. Check operability.

Replacement of recessed light bulbs (with E type socket):

  1. Turn off the power supply.
  2. Pry off the insulating ring with a screwdriver.
  3. Pull out the light.
  4. Remove the protective housing, change the bulb.
When replacing the lamp, it is important not to damage the bulb

Replace light source with cap G23:

  1. Turn off the power on the shield.
  2. Put the lamp on the table, turn the plafond to the top and remove it.
  3. Remove the bulb by gently pulling it away from the lampshade over the edge of the bulb.
  4. Put a new light bulb in the socket into the socket and press on the end of the bulb until it stops.

It is important to carefully remove the flask from the plastic retainer. It is easy to break, but it does not affect the performance of the product.

troubleshooting

Cracks in the lampholder may appear due to mechanical action (shock, fall, vibration) on the lamp. Elements need to be changed. To do this, turn off the electricity, remove the lamp and lampholder. The wires need to be slightly stripped and inserted into the terminals of the new cartridge. When working, it is important not to confuse the cores.

Ballast may break in the lamp. It controls the amount of voltage applied. If the breakdown is connected with ballast, it will be cheaper to buy a new lamp. You can determine the malfunction by the buzz of the device.

Fuse or power supply failure is detected by flickering. If the lamp flashes, you need to reset the power by turning the switch on and off. If this does not help, you will have to change the block.

Useful Tips

Fluorescent lamps contain harmful chemical components that are hazardous to health - for example, mercury. Therefore, it is especially important to carry out all the work carefully, being careful not to break the flask. If the flask still crashes, you need to open the windows in the apartment for ventilation and collect the fragments in a sealed container.

It is important to dispose of the lamp correctly. Luminescent light sources must not be disposed of with household or construction waste. For fluorescent light sources there are special reception points to which you want to take the lamp.

When installing a new light source, dust should be removed from the surface of the luminaire. This will increase the duration of the nodes and elements of the device.

Fluorescent lamps are suitable for daylight. They are economical, give a bright light, are used in overhead and built-in lamps and devices such as Armstrong. But, despite the long service life, the bulb may break and burn out. Change the light bulb carefully, carefully and in compliance with safety precautions.
