What to do if the hood does not work in the kitchen

The hood in the kitchen is a useful thing, it helps to get rid of unpleasant aromas that are emitted during cooking, absorbs greasy particles and filters the air, keeping the kitchen space clean. But when she wears out, she will need repairs. The call of the master is not affordable for everyone, and if there is a minor breakdown, then anyone who understands the hood device will be able to fix it. And first you need to find out how the hood is designed.

Hood device

Extractor fan in the kitchenAn extractor fan is a special fan that is installed above the stove and draws dirty air. Its structure includes additional filters, they absorb fat and harmful fumes during the preparation of food.

Such devices can be of two types:

  • coal - quite simple in construction and affordable. It works on the principle of recirculation - this means that the air that has become contaminated in the kitchen will be cleaned and then returned to the kitchen. Carbon filters are part of such a hood;
  • cooker hood. With the help of such a hood, dirty air is completely discharged from the kitchen due to its connection to the ventilation. It has only one filter - grease filter. If the house does not have a ventilation system, then specialists will take the pipe to the street.

If you often use the hood, you need to make sure that the grease filter is not dirty. It is recommended to change such a filter every four months with your own hands at home, otherwise the operation of the device will deteriorate and you will have to make repairs.

Reasons for malfunctioning

The causes of damage are different. But if your device has been in operation for more than ten years and has not been working recently, it means that the term of use has expired and you should purchase a new cooker hood, and DIY repair will not help here.

But if the hood did not have time to serve for a long time and already began to not cope with its functions or does not work at all, then you need to determine the cause of the breakdown in order to do the repair yourself.

  • Illiterate use of cooker hoods. The strainer must be cleaned once every three weeks. Change the carbon filter twice a year. It is also forbidden to turn on the device above the stove, on which the fire is on, if there is no vessel on it, since hot air damages the device and then it will be difficult to restore it. Use the hood correctly - you need to turn it on for a while (about a few minutes) before cooking, and turn it off 15 minutes after you have finished cooking. If these rules are not followed, then the fan will not be able to evaporate, and a bad smell will be emitted in the room.
  • Contacts may break. When the system works, it vibrates, it can break off poor contact. But this happens quite rarely.
  • Incorrect installation. Poorly connected wires or an excess of corrugation (duct).
  • Disconnect the wiring. The outlet does not work or the circuit breaker is broken.

Take note of the above causes of breakdowns so that in the future there are no such problems, and there is no need to resort to repair.

  • Engine or backlight malfunctions. To fix the problem, you need to check the machines in the electrical panel and the voltage level in the outlet. If there is no problem, check the power at the terminals, as the cord may be damaged. If the limit switch does not work, then adjust it.
  • The backlight works, but the engine is faulty. If the common contact is blown on the first button of the block, then no speed will work.If you replace the button block or solder the burned-out contact, then the breakdown will be eliminated. If the contact has disappeared or the wire has fallen off, you must reconnect the connectors.
  • The engine makes sounds, but does not work. The fuse could blow out, most often it is ceramic. The engine must be disassembled with your own hands in order to identify the cause of the breakdown. To repair the engine with your own hands, you need to ring its windings. Sound should come from the starting and working windings, regardless of the type of inclusion. If everything is OK there, then the capacitor is broken.
  • Backlight defective. Requires the installation of new lamps, checking their performance. In incandescent lamps, a breakdown can be in a button that turns on the backlight. In halogen lamps, the transformer burns out. The control gear breaks in the fluorescent lamps. Failure of the power button or contact failure can be in any lamp.
  • If any speed fails, it means overheating on the track board or the button just broke. In some cases, the speeds are switched using a balancing capacitor, if it breaks, then there will be problems.

In a cooker hood, the engine may also burn out, but such cases are rare. If this still happened - repair of the hood will cost half the cost of the device itself.

Other malfunctions or breakdowns are very easily fixed, and it is possible to repair them at home.
